Guideline research

As we all know, Augmented Reality is a new thing arising nowadays. Most designers don't understand it much and know little about how to design for it.

When I joined the Baidu AR team in mid-2018, there were only three junior designers and no professional design metrics or principles for AR design to systematically make design decisions and evaluate our design.

That's why I came up with the idea - research and publish an artifact to share more knowledge for both internal and external designers on AR design. This was the first Chinese design framework of AR design.

METHOD

Project experience plus APP examples

Based on our actual AR projects, one typical design we did for AR is to place something virtual in the environment, which is also a basic usage of AR techniques. That's why I started from this topic"AR Placement Scenario".

The first step was to break down the process that we considered for placing a virtual object successfully with an APP.  Then I came up with a structure of explaining how to design for it:

1. Definition of the step/stage

2. Possible design patterns with the suggestion of when and where to use.

The next step was to gather enough design patterns both from our designs and other AR APPs and critique them, to summarize design principles and points to be mindful.

Besides it, before writing, we read Apple and Google AR guidelines to inspire more professional insights.

4 critical parts in AR placement

Initiating

App initiation / Content onboarding / Model loading / Techical preparation

Scene building

Environmental recognition / Model placement

Interaction with models

Displacement / Zoom / Rotate / Select / Delete

Abnormal handling

Disappear / Out of bounds / Exit and Return

Here is the full version of the UX framework and design suggestion of AR placement scenario.
